Bioactive,
without the mystery.

Understand the living layers, the preparation period, and the upkeep behind a balanced system.

Bioactive does not mean maintenance-free. It means creating a managed living system in which the base, plants, decomposers, moisture, light, and daily care support one another.

01. Decide if it suits the home

Begin with the little soul's climate, hygiene, and monitoring needs. A planted living base can be valuable in the right setting, but it should never make observation or cleaning harder.

If treatment, quarantine, or close monitoring is needed, a simpler temporary setup may be the clearer choice.

02. Build from the bottom up

The correct layer structure depends on moisture and planting needs. Some humid systems benefit from drainage beneath a suitable living base; drier systems require a different approach.

  • Use a base with the right drainage, structure, and moisture retention.
  • Choose rooted plants that match the climate and available light.
  • Add leaf litter or similar surface material where appropriate.
  • Introduce a compatible decomposer community only after the environment is stable.

03. Establish before arrival

Run the planted system long enough to confirm stable climate readings, healthy plant growth, and a base that is neither waterlogged nor drying too quickly.

Test access points, ventilation, and equipment before the home is occupied. A living system still depends on reliable heating, lighting, and measurement.

04. Maintain the living system

Spot clean visible waste, prune and replace plants, refresh surface material, monitor drainage, and watch for mould or unwanted growth. A healthy system changes over time and needs regular review.

Keep a simple maintenance record so gradual changes are easy to notice.

A calm-care checklist.

  • Suitability confirmed for the intended little soul
  • Layer structure matched to the climate
  • Plants and decomposers selected for the same conditions
  • System established and measured before arrival
  • Ongoing cleaning and maintenance plan written
